General Sargent agrees with the proposals and conditions stated above, and informs that he will recommend the War Department in England to accede to them, and to send out 150 Martini-Henry Artillery carbines to be lent to the Volunteers, in accordance with the requisition of the Commandant (Lieutenant Colonel Crawford, R.A.).

In 1862 the Hong Kong Volunteer Artillery was raised; a good deal of zeal and interest was manifested by the inhabitants of the Colony in the Corps, and it became a very useful Auxiliary to the Royal Artillery for defensive purposes.
The guns, arms, and accoutrements were bestowed on the Colony by the Imperial Government, but in February 1881...
